Why I Started The Back Specialists

John Shevlin, Back Pain Specialist.

I’ve been in this industry for over 15 years, working with people at every level — from everyday back pain sufferers to high-level athletes.

But it wasn’t until I put my own back out that everything changed.
I’m naturally active, always pushing hard… and then I hit the wall: disc injury, nerve pain, surgery.

That was the turning point.

I realised that even with all my experience, the usual approaches weren’t enough. So I went down the rabbit hole — studying every resource I could find, learning from world-leading experts, and absorbing everything from physiotherapy to chiropractic, osteopathy to strength science, pain neuroscience to movement systems.

Out of that came something completely new.
A blended, step-by-step approach designed solely for back pain.
Something I believe is the most valuable of its kind in Ireland today.

That’s why I created The Back Specialists — a clinic 100% dedicated to helping people with back pain get back to doing what they love.

Section 2 — Our System

Not Physio. Not Chiro. Not Osteo. All of It — and More.

We use techniques from physio, chiro, osteo, and strength training… but what makes us different is the system.
A structured, accountable way to uncover exactly what your back needs.

Here’s what that looks like:

  • Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA):
A head-to-toe screen that shows us which areas are truly restricted and which are just compensating.
Why it helps: instead of chasing pain, we find the real root cause — often in a completely different part of the body.

  • Functional Movement Screen (FMS):
A simple series of tests highlighting weak links in mobility, strength, or stability.
Why it helps: it shows us where your body is vulnerable and helps design exercises that prevent flare-ups.

  • Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT):
A muscle testing method that reveals faulty patterns stored in your nervous system.
Why it helps: if one muscle has “switched off” and another is overworking, NKT helps us reset and restore balance.

  • The McGill Method:
Based on the work of Professor Stuart McGill, the world’s leading spine expert.
Why it helps: we test your spine’s tolerance for flexion, extension, and load — then build a core-strengthening plan that avoids irritation and builds resilience.

  • Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT):
Hands-on treatment that eases tight tissues, improves circulation, and calms pain signals.
Why it helps: it reduces protective tension so you can move freely and actually benefit from the exercises.

The Blend
No single method is enough. That’s why we’ve built a system that blends all of the above into one streamlined process.
You don’t just get a treatment — you get a complete strategy for fixing, understanding, and preventing your back pain.

Section 3 — Who We Help

Is This for You?

The Back Specialists is built for people who:

Success Stories

SOPHIA K, EAST WALL, DUBLIN.

I’ve been going to John for a few months now for a recurrent lower back pain issue that I’ve had all my adult life and it’s the first time I feel like something is actually helping. John has a sixth sense for where (and why) pain originates. He is also generally a wonderful person and just really cares.

TONI C, TERENURE.

John is an extremely professional and knowledgable therapist. He has been working with my son to resolve a very tricky and debilitating back issue. I cannot believe the difference in my son’s condition. I couldn’t recommend him highly enough. (as an extra bonus, he is kindness personified).

JAMIE D, GOATSTOWN, DUBLIN.

My experience with John completely exceeded my expectations. He was incredibly thorough and helpful. His knowledge is extremely vast and he helped me understand things in very simple terms. A really good investment in my health. Strongly recommend!

IAN B,
CO. CORK

"Incredibly eye opening experience as he took a holistic view to why I had back pain instead of just treating the inflicted area (it turned out that while my back was compressed, the cause was a serious injury I had suffered when I was a kid). John is incredibly approachable, has great insight and is superb at explaining the issue and his approach to fixing it. Gives great exercises to do that I could really feel help benefit me. Continue to go to him now to strengthen my back and ensure no issues will occur in the future. Couldn't recommend him enough!

MICK T,
CO. CORK

I went to see John in 2020 with a disc issue that had been causing me significant pain for 4 months. I’d seen numerous physios that could not help. I’d had a disc operation in 2006 and went to a neurosurgeon who was categorical that I required further surgery. I did not want this and with John’s help avoided a further op. John helped me to correct the slipped disc through a wholistic approach incorporating movement, posture, stretching, strengthening, homework and repetition. Four years on I am walking, cycling and exercising without pain. He’s a fantastic educator and shares excellent guidance for recovery homework. I can’t recommend him highly enough and I’m very grateful. Thanks John.
